How the BLS Instructor Essentials Course works

The BLS Instructor Essentials Course is taught in a blended-learning format.  To become an AHA BLS Instructor, candidates must complete the online portion, followed by the hands-on session, which is classroom based.  The online portion of the course contains both core content and discipline-specific modules to prepare the instructor candidates for the hands-on session.  In the classroom, our Faculty will continue preparing instructor candidates to become AHA instructors by focusing on the in-depth material about the Heartsaver and BLS disciplines that candidates will be teaching.  The hands-on session includes instruction, practice, and an exam, allowing instructor candidates to successfully use their instructor materials and skills. As a BLS Instructor, candidates will also be able to teach the following courses:

  • BLS- Basic Life Support (for Healthcare Providers)
  • Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED
  • Heartsaver CPR AED
  • Heartsaver First Aid
  • Heartsaver Pediatric First Aid CPR AED

Who Can Take This Course

The BLS Instructor Essentials Course is for instructor candidates who have already successfully completed the BLS Provider Course.

Prerequisites for Instructor Candidates

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have a current American Heart Association BLS Provider course completion card (no other BLS certifications will be accepted)
  • Be proficient in the skills of BLS
  • Complete the BLS Instructor Essentials Online
  • Be aligned with an American Heart Association Training Center

Steps to Become an Instructor

  1. Be accepted by a AHA Training Center by enrolling in an Instructor Course and completing an Instructor Candidate Application with that Training Center.
  2. Have current AHA Provider status in the discipline for that Instructor Essentials course and be proficient in all the skills of that discipline.
  3. Successfully complete the Instructor Essentials Course, including both the online and hands-on session
  4. Successfully be monitored teaching within 6 months of completing the hands-on session of the Instructor Essentials course.

 

Course Description

This rigorous course is designed to provide the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to be certified as an Emergency Medical Technician. This course, based on the US Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum will provide the student with knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, patient assessment, airway and cardiac arrest management, hemorrhage control, basic wound care, management of orthopedic emergencies, childbirth, response to medical emergencies, and emergency medical services operations.

Instruction is provided via classroom and online didactic sessions and skills labs. Additionally, each student must complete 10 patient contacts either on an ambulance or in the emergency room. Total instructional time is approximately 180 hours. Successful completion of the program includes attendance of class sessions, successfully passing each quiz and exam with a minimum sore of 70%, and successful completion of a formal practical skills examination. Students who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) EMT Cognitive Exam. Students passing the NREMT exam will be eligible to apply for state certification with the Minnesota Emergency Medical Services Regulatory Board (EMSRB).

Course Schedule

This course will meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6 PM to 10 PM, there will be two Saturday skill sessions dates to be determined by the members of the class

Required Materials

Computer with reliable internet access is required to access homework assignments, quizzes and tests.

The textbook will be Emergency Care, 14th Edition (provided as part of course fee).

Entrance Requirements

This is considered to be an entry level course therefore there are no pre-requisites to taking the course.

Students wishing to take the course must:

  • Be able to read, write, and understand the English Language
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Not have a criminal history which would deny them certification through the EMSRB or the NREMT

Course Fee

$1295.00  This includes tuition, books, access to the online learning system, and practical exam. The fee does NOT include NREMT testing fees (currently $80 per attempt).
